MBTA Thanksgiving 2026 schedule and holiday travel
What the T runs over Thanksgiving week, the last Commuter Rail trains on Thanksgiving night, and tips for Logan, Black Friday and the long weekend.
Quick answer: Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov 26, 2026. That day the subway, Silver Line and buses run a Sunday schedule, Commuter Rail runs a weekend schedule, and the MBTA's current schedule has no ferry trips. On Friday, Nov 27, the Red, Orange and Blue Lines run a Saturday schedule, buses run a "no school" Friday schedule, and Commuter Rail runs its normal weekday service. Wednesday, Nov 25 is a normal weekday.
Where this comes from: the MBTA's own published schedule data, checked October 29, 2026. This is the same feed that trip-planning apps use. The MBTA's holiday page lists Thanksgiving but hadn't posted its notice yet. We'll update this page when it does.
Thanksgiving week at a glance
Wednesday, Nov 25 is a normal weekday. Saturday, Nov 28 and Sunday, Nov 29 run weekend schedules. The two days in between are different:

| Buses and Silver Line | Sunday schedule | "Friday (no school)" schedule |

*The MBTA has extended the East Boston, Lynn, Winthrop and Quincy ferry routes through Dec 31, but their schedules after Nov 25 aren't published yet. Check the ferry schedules before you go.
Getting home from Thanksgiving dinner by Commuter Rail

**This is a Franklin/Foxboro Line train that runs via the Fairmount Line and stops at its stations. The last Fairmount Line train leaves at 10:55 pm and ends at Readville.
Schedules can still change before the holiday, so check your line's schedule the day before you travel. If you're coming back into Boston, look up the last inbound train from your town too. On weekend schedules, gaps of two hours or more are common.
Flying out of Logan
- Silver Line SL1. It runs between South Station and every Logan terminal. The MBTA says rides from the airport are always free. Going to the airport, the change from the Red Line to the SL1 is free too.
- Blue Line. Go to Airport station, then take the free Massport shuttle to your terminal.
- On Thanksgiving Day. The SL1 and the Blue Line run Sunday schedules, so leave extra time if you're flying that day.
For step-by-step directions, see our Logan Airport guide.
What it costs
- Subway and bus. The subway is $2.40 one way, and a local bus is $1.70. Tap a contactless credit or debit card, phone or watch, or use a CharlieCard or CharlieTicket.
- Commuter Rail. $2.40 to $13.25 one way, depending on the zone. Tap-to-pay doesn't work on the Commuter Rail.
- $10 holiday pass. Per the MBTA, a $10 pass covers unlimited Commuter Rail rides on all lines from Thanksgiving Day, Nov 26, through Sunday, Nov 29. Buy it in the mTicket app, at the ticket windows at North Station, South Station and Back Bay, or on board. It isn't sold at fare machines.
- SL1 to and from Logan. Free from the airport. Going to the airport, you pay one $2.40 subway fare, and the change from the Red Line to the SL1 is free.
- Kids. Children 11 and under ride free.
Fares as of October 2026. Check the MBTA's fares page before you ride.
Black Friday and the long weekend
- TD Garden double-header on Fri, Nov 27. The Bruins play the Maple Leafs at 1 pm and the Celtics play the Hawks at 8 pm. North Station is on the Orange and Green Lines. The Orange Line runs a Saturday schedule that day, so trains may come less often than on a normal Friday. See our TD Garden guide.
- Holiday markets and lights. Snowport (Seaport), the SoWa Christmas Market (South End) and ZooLights at Stone Zoo are all closed on Thanksgiving Day and open again Friday. See our guide to holiday lights by T.
- The Nutcracker. Boston Ballet's run at the Citizens Opera House opens Friday, Nov 27.
Going to the Plymouth parade (Sat, Nov 21)?
America's Hometown Thanksgiving Parade steps off at 10 am at Plymouth Rock on Saturday, Nov 21. That's the weekend before Thanksgiving. There's no train to Plymouth itself. The Kingston Line ends at Kingston. On the current schedule, Saturday trains reach Kingston at 9:41 am and 11:09 am. The parade's official page doesn't list shuttles. Check with the organizer or GATRA before you count on a connection from Kingston. For other ways to get there, see Boston to Plymouth.
Construction to know about
From Nov 20 to Nov 22, the weekend before Thanksgiving, shuttle buses replace Red Line trains between Broadway and JFK/UMass on the Ashmont branch and between Broadway and North Quincy on the Braintree branch. The MBTA's November work announcement doesn't list any subway shutdowns for Thanksgiving week itself. For planned work on any weekend, see MBTA this weekend.
