New Year's Eve 2026 in Boston on the T: First Night and getting home
First Night is free and centered on Copley Square. Here is what's confirmed so far, what the MBTA did last year, and how to plan your trip home.
Quick answer: First Night Boston returns on Thursday, Dec 31, 2026. It's free, it's centered on Copley Square, and it includes a procession from Copley Square to Boston Common and two fireworks shows, at 7 pm over Boston Common and at midnight over the Inner Harbor. The MBTA hasn't announced its New Year's Eve 2026 service yet. Last year it made rides free from 8 pm and ran subway trains until about 2 am. Plan to take the T, but check this page or the MBTA's holiday page in mid-December for this year's details.
We'll update this page when First Night posts its full schedule and the MBTA announces its New Year's Eve plan. Both usually come out in the second half of December.
What's confirmed for this year
- Date. Thursday, Dec 31, 2026. The MBTA's holiday page lists New Year's Eve (Dec 31) and New Year's Day (Fri, Jan 1, 2027) as days with modified service, with details to come ("Check back here for details").
- First Night Boston. The official site says the festival will "open 2027." It's free, with no purchase required. The site mentions Copley Square and a procession of groups from Copley Square to Boston Common. The full schedule hasn't been posted yet.
- Fireworks. First Night's fireworks page lists two shows: 7 pm over Boston Common and midnight over Boston's Inner Harbor.
What happened last year (for planning)
These are last year's arrangements (Dec 31, 2025). They may change for 2026.
- Free rides from 8 pm. The MBTA said fares on all its modes, including the Commuter Rail, would be free from 8 pm, with the fare gates open. Boston.com's report of the announcement listed the subway, buses, ferries and The RIDE.
- Late trains. The last subway trains left between about 1:45 and 2:50 am, depending on the line. Subway service also increased after 3 pm, according to Boston.com.
- Commuter Rail ran a regular weekday schedule. That means your last train home may leave before the midnight fireworks. Check your line.
- Fireworks. Last year's shows were at 7 pm on Boston Common and at midnight along Long Wharf, according to WBUR.
Which T stop for each First Night spot
| Where | Nearest stations |
|---|---|
| Copley Square (Trinity Church, Boston Public Library) | Copley (Green Line), Back Bay (Orange Line and Commuter Rail) |
| Boston Common (7 pm fireworks, Frog Pond) | Park Street (Red/Green), Boylston (Green) |
| City Hall Plaza (main stage last year) | Government Center (Green/Blue), State (Orange/Blue), Haymarket (Orange/Green) |
| Long Wharf (midnight fireworks last year) | Aquarium (Blue), State (Orange/Blue) |
For last year's First Night, the City recommended taking the MBTA between event sites.
Tips for the night
- Find your last train before you go out. Subway service ran until about 2 am last year, but Commuter Rail kept its regular weekday schedule. If you live outside the subway area, the last Commuter Rail train is your real deadline.
- Pick a quieter station for the trip home. After the midnight fireworks, Aquarium and State get crowded. Walking 10 minutes to Downtown Crossing, Park Street or Haymarket can get you on a train sooner.
- No drinking on the T. Transit Police said last year that they won't tolerate it.
- Dress for waiting outside. It's late December in Boston, and platforms at outdoor stations are cold.
What it costs
- Subway and bus. The subway is $2.40 one way, and a local bus is $1.70. Tap a contactless credit or debit card, phone or watch, or use a CharlieCard or CharlieTicket.
- Commuter Rail. $2.40 to $13.25 one way, depending on the zone. Tap-to-pay doesn't work on the Commuter Rail, so use the mTicket app, a ticket from a fare machine or ticket window, or pay the conductor.
- Free after 8 pm? Last year, yes. The MBTA hasn't announced this year's plan yet.
- Kids. Children 11 and under ride free.
Fares as of October 2026. Check the MBTA's fares page before you ride.
