If you miss the last train
- Look for a late bus. Some bus routes run until after 2 am, see the table above.
- Walk if it's close. Downtown Boston is compact, and many trips across the center are walkable.
- Wait for the first train. The first trains pass downtown between 5:07 am and 5:46 am Monday to Saturday, and between 5:38 am and 6:26 am on Sunday.
- Ask Cobblehop. Late at night, when nothing runs for a while, Cobblehop says so, for example “No trains or buses until 5:29 AM.” It shows the walk next to the first train or bus, so you can pick.
If you need to change lines downtown, the last connection can be earlier than the last train on your second line. To check your own trip, ask Cobblehop when the last train home leaves.
Holidays, events and planned work
- Planned work. Shuttle buses replace trains on some nights and weekends, and the times above don't apply then. Per the MBTA, there are no Green Line trains between North Station and Babcock Street, Cleveland Circle, Kenmore and Heath Street from November 7 to 15, 2026, and shuttle buses replace Red Line trains between Broadway and North Quincy from November 20 to 22. Check MBTA closures and shuttles this weekend before you go.
- Holidays. On Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26, 2026, the subway runs a Sunday schedule. See the Thanksgiving guide.
- Halloween in Salem. The Newburyport/Rockport Line has its own schedule on October 31 and November 1. See Getting around Salem in October.
- New Year's Eve. See New Year's Eve in Boston on the T for First Night and getting home.
- Big games and concerts. Trains are crowded after events, so give yourself extra time. See TD Garden by T and Gillette Stadium by train.
